Providing a Google Analytics tracking code (GA3/GA4)

  • Updated

Google currently offers two different versions of Google Analytics:

  • Google Analytics - GA3 Universal Analytics
    • The previous standard type, which will be discontinued on 01.07.2023.
  • Google Analytics - GA4
    • The next generation of Analytics for websites and apps.

For both versions we offer a native integration, which can be set up directly via our "Tracking Tools" function. Both versions can also be used in parallel to ensure a smooth transition from GA3 to GA4.

Alternatively, Google Analytics can also be set up directly via Google Tag Manager to have additional flexibility in when and how the different events are executed, as well as what data should be transferred. You can find a first point of contact in the official Google Help Center.

Overview of this article

Google Analytics - GA4

The standard solution if Google Analytics has not yet been set up.
Note: If you are currently still using GA3 (Universal Analytics), you must have switched your tracking from Google to GA4 by 01.07.2023.

Quick Start Guide for elopage

A Google Analytics account is required to set up your GA4 tracking.

  • To do this, create a free account at https://analytics.google.com. Please visit the official Google Analytics support section if you need help setting it up.
    • You can find the settings in Google Analytics under 'Manage > Property > Create New Property.'
    • Create a new data stream
      • Go to 'Manage > Data streams > Add streams' and select the 'Web' stream.
      • Provide a URL and name.
      • Under "Optimized Analytics," click "More"
      • Hide the advanced settings in the Page Views option
      • Deactivate the option "Page changes based on events in the browser history"
We always automatically send the corrected page views. If this option is activated, an additional event "page_view" will be fired by GA4 in addition to the "pageview" event.

      • Click on "Save"
  • Go to "Marketing" / "Tracking Codes" to provide the tracking data in your seller account.

  • Follow the instructions in the -> main article on setting up tracking codes for basic instructions on setting up a tracking code.
    • Select "Google Analytics - GA4" as the type.
    • Enter your "Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID" to link your account. This starts with "G-" and can be found in your Analytics account under 'Admin > Property > Data Streams > Web stream details.'
  • Add additional GA4 events (optional).
    • GA4 is integrated using the Google tag (gtag.js).
    • You can customize the event dates according to your needs. Use the variables we provide.
Note that the code for GA4 events is different from that for GA3. Learn more use cases for your GA4 events in the Google Help Center
    • Measuring e-commerce
      • Currently, we do not yet offer 100% support across the entire funnel for separate Analytics e-commerce reporting. However, you can still set up your own reporting in Analytics or adjust the events accordingly. Note that, for example, it is not possible to measure impressions of more than one product on a page.

Google Analytics - GA3 Universal Analytics

Universal Analytics will be discontinued on 01.07.2023. Please make sure that you have changed your tracking by then. During the transition period, you can also play GA3 and GA4 in parallel to better understand the effect on the collection of your data from the change.

In addition, Google offers a variety of supports to make the switch in the best possible way:

Quick start guide for elopage

A Google Analytics account is required to set up your GA4 tracking.

  • To do this, create a free account at https://analytics.google.com. We recommend setting up a GA4 account directly.
    • You can find the settings in Google Analytics under 'Manage > Property > Create a new property > Show advanced options.'
      • Check "Create Universal Analytics Property" to set up a corresponding GA3 account
      • (!) Attention: If you also activate the option "Create both Google Analytics 4 and Universal Analytics property," a GA4 account will also be set up.
In this case, you don't need to set up a separate GA4 tracking code with elopage. Analytics tracks user interactions through the GA3 code and automatically sends it to your GA4 account.
  • Go to "Marketing" / "Tracking Codes" to provide the tracking data in your seller account.

  • Add additional GA4 events (optional).
    • GA3 is integrated by means of the Universal Analytics Tag (analytics.js). Please note that the event scripts are different from the gtag.js used in GA4.
    • You can customize the event dates according to your needs. Use the variables we provide. In addition, you can learn about other use cases for your GA3 events in the Google Help Center.
